SPIRITUAL GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES
Sundays @
(Fellowship Hall)
January 8-February 19* I Would Like to Know - Questions and Answers Taught by Pastor Joel Leyrer This type of class has been offered at St. John's in the past and has been well received because of its variety, so it's time to do it again. Class participants are encouraged to submit questions ahead of time about any area of Christianity they'd like to see addressed. What's on your mind? Start thinking now, and we'll talk about it...List your questions using a form available on the Bible study handout table in the Fellowship Hall.
*Note: no class on Sunday, January 22 - World Mission Festival
January 22 World Mission Festival Taught by Pastor Peter Leyrer Pastor Peter Leyrer, pastor at Pilgrim Lutheran in Minneapolis, MN and former missionary in Taiwan, will speak on his past and present world missionary experiences.
February 26-April 1 Translations of the Bible Prof. Steve Geiger The number of translations in the English language has multiplied incredibly, and the translation we are most familiar with, the NIV, has recently undergone a significant revision. Such an environment obligates us to understand better the nature of Bible translations. How can a single Greek or Hebrew biblical text result in so much variety? What different translation philosophies are employed? What translation differences are dangerous, and which are of little consequence? Grapple with the challenges of Bible translation, even as you grow in your appreciation for the miracle of God's inspired Word.
April 15-May 13 Faith that Works: A Study of James Prof. Daniel Leyrer We tend to emphasize in our churches creeds over deeds, doctrine over doing. Yet, true Christian faith shows itself in loving deeds, and all Christian doctrine is practical. Nowhere in the Bible is the practical intersection of faith and life taught more clearly than in the New Testament Epistle of James. Under God's grace our careful study of James will help us see that while we are not saved by our works, a faith in Jesus is a Faith that Works.
Sundays @
(School Lecture Hall)
January 8-February 19* Milestones in the Early Church Prof. James Korthals For many, the period after the writing of the New Testament is a dark void. In this class we will consider how developments that took place after 100 A.D. continue to impact and influence the church of today. Each week we will consider a different facet of the early church, including: 1. New Testament Canon and Pseudepigrapha, 2. Persecution and Martyrdom, 3. The Church "Fathers" and the Apostles Creed, 4. The Council of Nicea and its Creed, 5. How the Bishop of Rome became the Pope, and 6. Purgatory and Indulgences.
*Note: no class on Sunday, January 22 - World Mission Festival
