Genesis 32:10 * November 28, 2002 * Thanksgiving Day * Pastor Pagels

In the name of the One from whom all blessings flow, dear Christian friends:

Fill in the blank.  “Thanksgiving is a time for __________.”  Because of the traditions associated with the holiday, maybe you were thinking that Thanksgiving is a time for food.  That choice might have something to do with the fact that an estimated 270 million turkeys and 572 million pounds of cranberries and 831 million pounds of pumpkins will be raised in the United States this year.

Or perhaps you were thinking differently and said that Thanksgiving is a time for friends.  The millions of people who are hitting the road this weekend are not just driving around aimlessly.  They are going to see family.  They are traveling to share the day with loved ones.  They are braving the snow and the cold to be home for the holiday.

A select few among us may believe that Thanksgiving is a time for football.  Even though the Packers are not playing today, some will be migrating from the dinner table to the couch after dinner to watch whoever is playing.

Food.  Friends.  Football.  That is what Thanksgiving is all about for many people.  And there is nothing wrong with that.  After all, today is a national holiday.  And Thanksgiving is observed by all kinds of people.

Even though Thanksgiving is not a church holiday, there is no better place for us to begin our celebration than right here.  Like many others, we gather together to give thanks for our blessings.  Unlike others, we gather in God’s house to acknowledge the source of these blessings.

Thanksgiving is a time for many different things, but first and foremost for Christians…

THANKSGIVING IS A TIME FOR HUMBLE REFLECTION

I.  We acknowledge our unworthiness

        II.  We appreciate God’s goodness
