Just under 498 years ago, Martin Luther nailed 95 statements to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany on October 31, 1517 – the night before the major church celebration of All Saint’s Day.  He hoped that many of the next morning’s worshippers would see his statements pointing out some places where the church had strayed from the truth of the Bible.

The War to end all Wars – that was the slogan used to advertise drafting an army to fight in World War I.  Thousands of American soldiers went off to fight, thinking that no matter how hard the battle would end up being, this would be the war that would end all wars, the last one, the problem solved for good.  But you know as well as I do that the real world was very different from these dreams and wishes: a mere 20 years later, World War II broke out and nearly twice as many people died, and wars continued, even after making the 20th century possibly the bloodiest century in world history.  Nothing had really changed – nations were and are still incapable of getting along, despite the best efforts of the brightest of people.
