Dear Friends in Christ, On the first Sunday of June we began a summer sermon series on the Ten Commandments. Last week we finished numbers 9 and 10. There are no more. So today, on the fourth Sunday of August, we bring this series to a close.

When you take the time to confess your sins, as I do mine, where do you start, and where do you finish? The reason that I ask you to think about this is that one of the words that more than likely doesn’t regularly occur in our conversation with God is the word “covet.”

Dear Friends in Christ, A king in ancient times once asked a wise man to bring him the best and worst parts of a slaughtered ox. The wise man brought him the tongue. As a dining delicacy in that culture and age, it was the best part. At the same time it was the worst part because of all the noise it made.

We’ll get to the sad and striking events of our text a bit later on in this sermon, but let’s begin today by recalling that in each one of the Ten Commandments there is something in particular that God is protecting or emphasizing for us.
