Nothing Has Changed - August 27, 2017

Pastor Bitter

Sermon Text:  Romans 9:1-5

Watch service video

We’ve heard a lot of bold promises from God the last couple of weeks in Romans.  Last week we heard about how God says that in him, no matter what the situation, we are “more than conquerors,” or “super-conquerors,” and because of that nothing in the highest heavens or the depths of the earth can separate us from our God.  Pretty bold.  Or the week before that we heard God’s promise that all things work out for the good of those who love him – even things that are very difficult and unpleasant.  The week before that when God said that when we pray, the Spirit is there with us, expressing our thoughts and words even when we can’t figure out what exactly to say.  And if you keep working backward, you’ll find more.  Bold promises.  Has the thought ever crossed your mind that maybe some of this sounded just a little too good to be true?

Dear Friends in Christ:  Each of us can fill in our own particulars, but what is true for all of us is this:  At times we find ourselves in situations we’d rather not be in. Using weather as a metaphor, it kind of goes like this.  The winds of unwanted change begin to blow and the dark storm clouds of doubt and uneasiness start settling in over our lives.  And then the “what ifs” begin to rain down.  What if this?  What if that?  What if we can’t make ends meet?  What is this doesn’t end well?  What if this changes our life from here on in?

Every day is full of choices: what to wear, what to eat, what to watch when we turn on the television.  Which way are you going to take to work or home from work to avoid traffic and construction as much as possible?  In the end, most of these choices don’t affect our lives too much, and chances are, we are going to get the chance to choose all over again tomorrow.

The Spirit Speaks with You - August 6, 2017

Pastor Bitter

Sermon text: Romans 8:26, 27

About five or six years ago, a friend of mine suggested that I might try keeping something he called a “prayer journal.”  The basic idea is this: you take a notebook and each day when you say your prayers before bed you write down the date and three or four things that you want to include in your prayers.  You do this in a little column along the left side of the page.  After a year has passed, you start a second column, matching up the dates.  And then a third.  And so on.  It’s an interesting spiritual exercise, especially after a couple of years, because you get to see what happened with the things that you included in your prayers, and can be reminded of what important people and things were on your mind.
